What We Do

The PBM Foundation is a 501c3 non-profit organization that supports research on, and adoption of, Photobiomodulation (PBM) Therapy worldwide and develops and implements PBM Therapy curriculum at leading universities.

PBM applies infrared and near infrared light to energize cell function.
Energized cells can heal the body, treat medical conditions, and support general wellness.
Over 100 million individual patient treatments and 700 successful clinical trials have proven PBM effective and safe. PBM equipment is FDA approved. PBM has been formally presented to the White House, Executive Branch agencies, Congress, Medical Forums, and the United Nations.

Current Projects

Improving health outcomes in specific medical conditions

This includes preventing or reducing the side effects of cancer chemotherapy, especially Oral Mucositis (OM).

PBM is so successful, it is now the recommended standard of care among oncologists worldwide. Leading Cancer Centers, including Saint Jude and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), have incorporated PBM into their Standard Order Sets.

Numerous BCBS affiliates reimburses PBM treatments for OM as “medically necessary”.

Britain’s National Health Program covers PBM treatments for OM.

Pilot studies are being initiated for using PBM to prevent Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS), the leading cause of death from COVID-19.

The FDA has authorized clinical trials for using PBM to reverse the effects of Dry Age-Related Macular Degeneration.

Solving the Opioid Crisis

PBM successfully treats the underlying physical and psychological conditions causing Opioid Use Disorder (OUD).

Evidence for PBM managing pain, and treating depression, has been presented at the U.S. Government’s Opioid and Pain Management Task Force planning meetings.

Reducing healthcare costs

PBM treatments can dramatically reduce recovery time, shorten hospital stays, and limit readmissions. Depending on the medical condition, PBM has reduced patient healthcare costs between 30-80 percent.

Treating Veterans

PBM is being used at Veterans Hospitals for supporting physical therapy, wound healing, and treating Traumatic Brain Injury – TBI (resulting from roadside bombs).

Military Preparedness

U.S. and NATO are using PBM as an integral part of their physical conditioning programs.

PBM is now a key component for increasing deployability in all Service Branches and is present at military bases throughout the U.S. and Europe.

Professional Development

PBM is being incorporated into medical curriculum. This is a critical step to PBM being accepted as a viable mainstream medical therapy.

Shepherd University’s School of Nursing is the first Nursing School to require PBM knowledge and application as part of their Nursing Degree Program.

Universite Paris-Saclay is the first medical school to offer a Medical Degree in PBM.

Establishing Research “Centers of Excellence”

The first PBM Center of Excellence is at Shepherd University. It is emerging as a global leader in the education of health professionals. It is partnering with leading scientists and medical schools to support reseafrch and clinical trials using PBM to help people in West Virginia, and around the world, recover from diseases and conditions having no effective treatment today.

Our Priorities

USE

Expand the use of PBM to benefit more patients. Include PBM in clinical practice guidelines in more hospitals for treating more conditions.

REIMBURSEMENT

Expand reimbursement of PBM by expanding coverage through Medicare, TRICARE, and private insurers.

RESEARCH

Increase research funding to gather more clinical evidence of PBM’s effectiveness for treating additional medical conditions and patient populations.
