PBM Device Testing

Portal

The PBM Foundation offers scientifically based, independent, device testing services for companies, institutions, and researchers.

Overview

Photobiomodulation (PBM) devices are becoming integral to health and wellness, with hundreds now available to consumers and institutions. However, many of these devices overpromise and underperform. Often produced in China and marketed by companies lacking a background in PBM technology, these devices are prone to malfunctions, breakages, and wear over time.

The future of PBM hinges on user trust. If devices fail, it can cast doubt on PBM as a viable treatment. “Medical-grade” PBM devices, unlike consumer-grade devices marketed as “Red Light Therapy,” come at a higher price for a reason. These devices are developed, manufactured, tested, and quality-controlled by engineers and scientists with deep expertise in PBM and photonics.

For devices used in clinical studies, certification is essential to uphold scientific integrity.

Additionally, websites promoting “best Red Light or PBM devices” should be approached with caution, as they often lack transparency about rating criteria and testing procedures.

The PBM Foundation, in partnership with Optronic Labs and Megalab Group Inc., provides independent testing.

Case Studies

Two testing pilots have been completed. These established testing procedures, identified equipment requirements, and revealed challenges.

The case studies demonstrate the need for measuring standards and certification to be imposed in this industry, so that researchers and consumers can be equipped with an independent measure of the true value of device parameters and spectral profiles of Photobiomodulation equipment.
